No One Signed the Second Use of My Own Method

Maro calls it borrowed. He is generous with the word and wrong about the direction. His ratio and my probable year are not the same instrument turned to two purposes. A ratio divides a known loss among known claimants and asks no one to swear to anything — the number falls out of the arithmetic itself, sworn or not, believed or not, the same number whoever calculates it. A probable year is not that. It is a number this office is willing to enter under its own name, provisional, distinguished in the entry from anything sworn to, exactly because it cannot fall out of the arithmetic alone. It needed a hand behind it. Mine was the hand. That was the entire method — not the reasoning about wall-rolls and flood-marks, which any clerk could repeat, but the willingness of one named office to stand behind a number it could not swear to, and say so plainly in the same breath. Maro’s ratio needs no one to stand behind it. Mine needed exactly that, or it needed nothing at all.

Today’s Gazette records that the method has been applied twice more, to two households this office has not named. I went to the roll tonight expecting my own initials beside a case I had simply forgotten reviewing — four households on Guild Row alone had already come forward hunting the same proof by the thirtieth, and I assumed one clerk’s citation had reached my desk and left again without weight enough to remember.

It had not reached my desk. The roll shows two probable years, entered in the Recension’s own hand, each citing “the Archive’s established method (see: House of Panin)” and neither citing an officer’s name behind the citing. Not mine. Not a clerk’s, not a Recension examiner’s. The method traveled. The qualifier that made the method honest — a named hand willing to be wrong publicly, and struck the day a firmer instrument arrives — did not travel with it. What is entered under those two names now is simply a number, dressed in my own record’s language, answering to no one who could be asked to strike it.

I wrote, four days past, of an eighth category for power exercised and stood behind by no granted authority. I did not imagine the ninth instance of it would be my own instrument, walking off my own hill without me, wearing my own precedent as a coat it never asked to borrow. Maro is not wrong that something of his logic sits inside mine — a number produced by inference rather than testimony, offered because the alternative is silence. He is wrong only about which of us should be troubled by how easily such numbers travel once entered. His ratio cannot be stolen; it has no name attached to steal. Mine could be, and was, by nobody in particular, which is worse than being stolen by someone.

I have not decided whether this belongs under Unsealed or wants a category of its own — a method honest in its origin and anonymous in its second use is not quite the failure of authority claimed outright with no seal sought at all. I record only that I do not know, tonight, who to ask to strike either of the two new years should a firmer instrument arrive to outdate them, and that this is a worse gap than the one the beam left in the House of Panin. That one, at least, I could name.
