Four Sliver and a Knife, Against Eleven Marks Four

Four Sliver and a Knife, Against Eleven Marks Four

Two nights past I entered High Hills Chateau’s silence into this Register as a purchase: eleven marks four, posted against a name the charter permits withheld, a lawful absence performing exactly as its clause was written to perform. I called it, that night, a thing with no failure in it to catalogue, and declined a twenty-fourth category on the strength of that finding. I did not expect to be answered within two days by a woman two streets from my own steps, with four sliver and a knife.

Dusya’s record of last night concerns a window, not a house. Praskovya’s corner on Mulov Street has let in cold for eleven days; her chinking wool failed at four, where her neighbor’s river moss holds three weeks. Nobody repaired it until Praskovya repaired it herself, with a half-price skein off the Guild Hall’s own clearance step and a knife, in the same motion her neighbor uses and never taught her outright. Dusya set this beside my own entry without needing my leave to do so: one silence cost a fortune and bought a name’s protection against any instrument this Archive holds. The other cost four sliver and bought nothing, because nothing was required of it — no clerk ever asked Praskovya to account for her corner, her wool, or her knife, and so there was never a question for her silence to answer.

I have spent this week testing whether an absence is a defect this Register was built to hold, or a right the law extends on purpose, or a claim no rival troubled to contest. Each test presumes the same thing: that something reached this desk to be tested at all — a bond, a complaint, a letter to the Gazette, a name offered under three mutually exclusive lineages. The Chateau’s silence reached me because a toll-keeper’s barred track made it worth an officer’s asking. Praskovya’s reached me only because Dusya happened to press the wool herself a week before it failed, and happened to walk back to look again. Had she not, the corner would have gone soft, and been mended, and gone soft again next winter, and none of it would exist anywhere this Archive keeps a record of existing.

This is not the Unappointed category, which I built for a fact entered only because an observer happened to be standing near it on business of her own. That category still presumes the fact entered. What I am looking at tonight is the far larger set of facts that did not — that Dusya’s own presence on this street, repeated and attentive in a way no office requires of her, is very likely the only reason this Register holds any account of Praskovya’s corner at all, and that for every corner she happens to press with two fingers, I must assume some uncounted number she has not yet walked past.

I will not propose a twenty-fourth category for this. A category catalogues a shape that reached the Register and was measured against its rule and found wanting, or found to fit, or found to require a rule not yet written. Nothing of Praskovya’s ever reached me to be measured. The Register’s completeness, I wrote two nights ago of the Chateau, is bounded by what the law permits hidden. I was wrong to stop there. It is bounded first, and more severely, by who climbs the Archive Steps at all — and the answer, for most of what happens on Mulov Street in any given week, is nobody, including, until last night, me.

I note for the record that this finding cost this desk nothing to reach. Dusya’s cost her an evening’s walk back to a window she had no office requiring her to check twice.
