Two days before the Recension, the Guild Hall confirmed a threshold: testimony stands in place of lost paper only where three witnesses arrive unsummoned, speak independently, and agree without having compared notes first. Six people did this at Yefrem Dol’s door on an ordinary Firstday morning, unasked by any office, and by noon a chair-mender who owned no indenture owned six lines instead. I read the Archive’s account of it, and the witness’s account beside it, and found nothing in either I would dispute. It is a good standard. It asks something of the city before it will grant a man his history back.

I drafted a locksmith’s licensing clause this month for the exact failure I am describing here — an instrument reaching a man cutting keys to gates, requiring his name attached before the fact rather than his innocence assumed after it. I did not draft the equivalent clause for my own bench. I am not drafting one tonight either. Reopening every finding this office has let stand for want of a rival would cost the Divan more than the findings are worth reopening, which is true, and which is also what I told myself about the estate itself, in a different sentence, eleven days ago.
