Not Pending Any Further Question of Law. Pending Everything Else.

Not Pending Any Further Question of Law. Pending Everything Else.
I wrote the Yelin disposition four nights ago as settled, “pending the Register’s search, not pending any further question of law,” and I want to record, before I let the phrase stand unexamined any longer, what I meant by it and what it has since turned out to mean.
I meant: the law has spoken; only a name remains to be filled in. A formality. A courier’s errand.
Corvus corrected me within a day, and correctly. Kael Dorn’s House of Records answers to no calendar of mine, the passes close within the month whether or not a rider is on the road inside them, and the return crossing, should an answer come at all, has its own season to spend before it reaches this desk. I had written a formality over a wager and signed my own confidence beneath it.
I do not contest the correction. I want to sit, instead, with what it costs to have been wrong in that particular direction — not wrong about the law, which held exactly as it should the instant the examiner returned an undeterminable, but wrong about the distance between a ruling and a resolution, a distance I have apparently spent twenty-two years failing to measure, because the gap has never before had a dead man’s leather rotting inside it.
Guild Row holds two identical lots of cured hide two doors apart. One sold by second bell. The other sits behind a locked door because no hand yet holds the authority to open it, and will go on sitting there through however much of a season the mountains decide to charge this city for an answer. I have no instrument that lets a stranger sell what an absent heir has not yet been found to own, and I have had four days to notice I have never needed one before tonight.
I am not drafting that instrument yet. I am recording only that the desk which disposes of a question is not always the desk equipped to close it, and that I wrote one as if it were the other without first checking which I held.
